What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a very small titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone in place of a missing tooth. It is restored with a natural-looking prosthetic crown and is strong enough to chew and bite just like a regular tooth because it is anchored in the jaw. Dental implants are fixed: they will not slip or fall out. While bridges and dentures are still a critically important part of dental care, dental implants offer conveniences that are unmatched by other tooth replacement methods.
Benefits of Dental Implants
- No dietary restrictions
- Won’t slip or fall out
- Preserve the jawbone
Dental Implants Process
Dental implants are comprised of three parts: the titanium screw that is implanted in the jaw, a connector called an “abutment,” and the final crown. The first step in the dental implants process is a consultation with an oral surgeon, who will also perform the implant placement. After placement, the implant will be left to fuse with the bone for a few months, and then you will return to us for a beautiful, natural-looking crown. The length of the process is between 3 and 12 months and is dependent on the specifics of your case.

Dental Implants FAQ
Do dental implants hurt?
No. Dental implant placement is done under anesthesia, making it a pain-free procedure. However, you may have some soreness following surgery for a day or two.
When will I have my permanent tooth?
On the day of surgery, you may be sent home with a temporary tooth while the implant heals. Your permanent crown will be placed 3-12 months after the dental implant is placed.
Do I need bone grafting?
Many patients do require bone grafting prior to having a dental implant placed, but everyone is different. Your oral surgeon will determine your need for bone grafting during the consultation and exam phase.
How do I care for my dental implant?
Caring for dental implants is just like caring for a natural tooth: brush twice and floss once daily.
